![]() This is the same dealer who once listed (and sold) a photo he identified as the Hal Roach starlet Edna Marion. Maybe the photos were taken by a well-known photographer. One prominent dealer has been selling what he claims are topless photos of Dolores Costello they're not. Half of the nude movie star photos on eBay aren't really of who they're claimed to be. That's unless they were taken earlier in the decade before success at Warner Bros in 1925. They look to be authentic but why would she pose for such pics after she gained movie stardom. The photos, at least some of them are on Google Images, Fanpix, Flickr. The photographer was well known lending truth to the photos except for one thing, they say she's dressed(if you can call it that) as Lady Godiva, but her hair arrangement is more of a fairy princess or something rather than Lady G. They, according to one story, were taken in late 1927 in a New York portrait photographer's studio. The story behind the Costello shots( I wanted to stay mum on Dolores Costello cause they are explicit enough but since you now brought it up) is that they are recently discovered photos. We must be careful Chris when we say something's not authentic. Gagman, that's not the Universal film star Laura LaPlante in those photos, no matter how many eBay sellers and Tumblr blogs say otherwise. But there were also a lot of non-theatrical American silent shorts, made by Cine-Art and other furtive independents, whose only purpose was to put naked girls on display. ![]() Nudity was more common in European silents than in American films Rina de Liguoro even appeared topless on postcards. (Mabel Normand's wearing a body stocking for her swimming sequence in Mickey (1917).) ![]() ![]() There's a strip poker sequence in The Road to Ruin (1928) that drew a lot of comment from exhibitors at the time, but surviving prints seem to all descend from a print with a jarring jump cut in the middle of that scene.ĭante's Inferno (1924) was run at Cinecon, and while I think body stockings were used in some cases, everybody else was wearing birthday suits. I don't think Betty Blythe was topless in just the foreign edit of The Queen of Sheba (1921), because she's topless in a surviving American lobby card for the film too. ![]() Tabu (1931) has just enough topless native girls in it to make up for its depressing finale.Ĭlara Bow is indeed shown topless in Wings (1927), but only in one frame! Hell's Four Hundred (1926) had some very under-clad models on view, if surviving stills are any indication. Hypocrites (1914) is a good example I don't remember if anyone's mentioned that one yet or not.ĭangerous Hours (1920) has a couple of ravished victims of Bolshevik atrocities on display. ![]()
